FAQs

  • New to stoicism? Our letters are the perfect way to gradually explore stoicism and the writings of Seneca.

Already a stoic master? Adding our weekly letters to your routine is a great way to supplement your study.

Philosophy is not meant to be binged. In fact, in letter 2 of the Moral Letters to Lucilius, Seneca advises “You must linger among a limited number of master thinkers and digest their works, if you would derive ideas which shall win firm hold in your mind” .

Our beautiful paper letters offer a decadent screen-free way to explore stoic philosophy gradually, in a fun and engaging format.

  • In a word, festive. We model our letter designs on 15th century illuminated manuscript editions of the Epistulae Morales ad Lucilium.

Each of your letters will arrive on parchment or vellum, beautifully typeset in a traditional humanist script and accented by decorated initials (dropcaps) and other ornamental design elements.

As of now, we print your letters on a high-resolution commercial printing press, but in the future we hope to switch to a more traditional Heidelberg Windmill press.

  • Great philosophical works are not meant to be read once. They’re meant to be read continually at different stages of life.

As Seneca said, “nothing hinders a cure so much as frequent change of medicine”. If you found meaning and guidance in your first reading of Seneca’s letters, you’ll find even more clarity in your second.

Our service is the most enjoyable way to re-read them.

  • Absolutely! Our letters make a great, thoughtful gift for new graduates, retirees, and others who love to contemplate how to live meaningfully.

  • We do, but with two caveats:

    1. Because international postage is considerably more expensive, we charge an international postage surcharge.

    2. There’s considerable variance in the reliability and quality of the world’s postal services, so outside the United States your letters may take 2-5 weeks to arrive, depending on your country.

Group Discounts: If you’d like to purchase stoic letters for more than ten people, special pricing is available. Please get in touch to request your custom quote.

Other Discounts: We offer special discount pricing for first responders, educators, veterans, and active-duty members of the military. If you qualify, please contact our support team.

  • At the moment, our letters use the 1916 translation by Dr. Richard Gummere of Haverford College, which we think does an excellent job of balancing old eloquence and precision-of-language with accessibility.

  • Stoic Letters is a service of Letterjoy.

  • New memberships begin at the start of the next calendar month after you joined.

So, for example, if you joined on July 15th, letters would begin to reach you in early August.

Note: New memberships may take up to 10 business days to process (though it’s usually much quicker), so if you order towards the end of a calendar month, your first letter might take a little bit longer to arrive.

If you’re located outside of the US: The world’s postal services vary in speed and reliability, so when your first letter arrives will depend upon your local carrier, but expect it to take at least 1-2 weeks longer.

Since we mail weekly, once your letters begin, they should continue to arrive at a regular cadence.

  • You’ll receive translated letters from the Epistulae Morales ad Lucilium.

We mail one letter every week, so the letters you receive will depend on your start date, but we mail sequentially, so you’ll experience Seneca’s letters in order.

For more specific information about our upcoming calendar, please reach out to our support team.
