FAQs

  • Philosophy is not meant to be binged. In fact, in letter 2 of the Moral Letters to Lucilius, Seneca advises “You must linger among a limited number of master thinkers and digest their works, if you would derive ideas which shall win firm hold in your mind” .

Limiting yourself to one letter per week and pondering that letter as you await your next is a great disciplined approach to truly internalizing Seneca’s words.

Our beautiful paper letters offer a screen-free way to explore stoic philosophy gradually, in a fun and engaging format.

  • Each of your letters will arrive on parchment or vellum, beautifully typeset with dropcaps and other ornamental elements by our designers.

We model our letter designs on 15th century illuminated manuscript editions of the Epistulae Morales ad Lucilium.

As of now, we print your letters on a high-quality digital commercial printing press, but in the future we hope to switch to a Heidelberg Windmill press.

  • Great philosophical works are not meant to be read once. They’re meant to be read continually at different stages of life.

As Seneca wrote, “nothing hinders a cure so much as frequent change of medicine”. If you found your first reading of Seneca’s letters to be insightful, you’ll find even more clarity in your second.

Our service is the most enjoyable way to re-read them.

  • We want you to love your letters. Not loving them? Let our support team know within 30 days of receiving your first letter and you’ll receive a full refund.

  • Absolutely! Our letters make a great, thoughtful gift for new graduates, retirees, and others who love to contemplate how to live meaningfully.

  • We do, but with two caveats:

    1. Because international first class postage is considerably more expensive than domestic postage, we charge an international postage surcharge.

    2. There’s considerable variance in the reliability and quality of the world’s postal services, so outside the United States your letters may take 2-5 weeks to arrive, depending on your country.

  • As of this writing, our letters use the 1916 translation by Dr. Richard Gummere of Haverford College, which we think perfectly balances the eloquence of historic language and the precision-of-language and accessibility of modern translation.

  • New memberships start at the start of the month following your order.

So, for example, if you joined on August 12th, letters would begin to reach you in early September.

Please Note: New memberships may take up to 10 business days to process (but it’s usually much quicker). If your order is placed towards the end of a calendar month, your first letter might take a little bit longer than normal to arrive.

For Those Of You Outside the US: The world’s postal services vary in speed and reliability, so the date that your first letter arrives will depend upon your local carrier, but expect it to take at least 1-2 weeks longer.

We mail weekly, so once your letters begin, they should continue to arrive at a regular cadence.
